The Top Ten Number One George Strait Hits

George Strait has been called many things – from a living legend to royalty by way of his nickname King George. And rightly so – because George Strait boasts the second most number one hit songs among any artist in any genre in history, totaling 52 number one hit songs, second to only Conway Twitty who had 55. George Strait sales total close to 62 million albums. Additionally George Strait has bragging rights to 13 multi-platinum, 30 platinum and 33 gold albums, and 16 CMA awards.

George Harvey Strait was born in Poteet, Texas on May 18, 1952. A true cowboy at heart, George Strait worked on his family’s 2,000 acre ranch in Big Wells, Texas through high school. In 1971, after eloping to Mexico with his high school sweetheart Norma to Mexico, George Strait enlisted in the US Army. While stationed in Hawaii in the early 1970s, he cultivated his country music sound with a band of Army buddies called Santee. After a four year stint in the military, George Strait enrolled in Southwest Texas State University, earning a degree in agriculture. It was in SWT that he formed his famous Ace In The Hole Band. In 1981, George Strait moved to Nashville, TN and signed with MCA records. “If You’re Thinking You Want a Stranger” reached number three in early 1982. The song set off a chain reaction of Top Ten hits that spanned into the ’90s. During a little over a decade plus, George Strait racked up 31 number one singles, beginning with 1982’s “Fool Hearted Memory.” The rest is history.

George Strait’s boxed set “Strait Out Of The Box” from 1995 is the 2nd best selling box set ever, boasting 8 million in the United States. As of spring 2006 George Strait boasted 40 #1 country singles on the Billboard Chart, with a total of 52 #1 hits. His new album is titled “It Just Comes Naturally” which features his current single, “Give it Away”, is due out October 3rd of this year. The album contains 15 newly recorded hits written with George Strait’s longtime friend and songwriter, Dean Dillon.
