Thrift Stores for Christmas Presents?
This year, similar to the last few Christmases, many of us are trying to buckle down enough to buy presents for family and friends. It’s hard to save when even the simple things in life eat up your budget, like bills, food, and gas. Short of Black Friday and waiting for things to be marked down to rock-bottom prices, attending to everyone on our Christmas list can be near impossible, especially if we live on a limited budget. Hand-crafting items is a great option for those who want to have a frugal Christmas, but not all of us have the time or the talent. So, is it okay to shop at thrift stores? While some might shake their head at gifting used items, here are a few things you might consider:
- Some items at thrift stores are brand new and still carry their original tags.
- Pre-owned items, especially figurines that have been well cared for, may not show signs of wear.
- Some items sold in thrift stores are hand-crafted and are not previously owned.
- Some people donate brand-named items in perfect condition; some even donate collectible art. Try checking out thrift stores located near upper-class neighborhoods. You might be surprised what you find.
- Proceeds from items bought at thrift stores usually support a good cause.
The item in the picture is a figurine I picked up last week for $2.99 at a local thrift store. I plan on giving it away this Christmas. One friend commented how she found an American Girl doll at Goodwill for $6 in pristine condition. American Girl dolls generally retail around $100. She wrapped it and put it away as soon as she brought it home.
There are treasures in thrift stores if you take the time to look. Don’t let a silly taboo keep you from giving quality gifts to your family and friends this Christmas.
