Tips for Easy Ways to Organize Linen Cupboards

The linen closet in many homes is extremely disorganized. Since sheets and towels of different shapes and sizes are all cohabiting behind the closed doors of this closet, it is easy for disarray to take over. But with a few simple tricks, any linen cupboard can be well-organized and easy to navigate.

Towels

The first key to organizing the towel cupboard is to get rid of any towels that are ragged or are not used regularly. Move any towels that are kept around just to clean up messes or wash the car to another location, for example the laundry room or the garage.

Sort the remaining towels into beach towels, bath size towels, hand towels and wash cloths. If there are different color schemes for different bathrooms, make a pile for each bathroom.

Since folded towels commonly do not fit the space on linen cupboard shelves, a great solution is to roll towels instead of folding them. Fold each towel in half, bringing the short ends together. The, fold it in half once more, crosswise to the first fold. Starting at one of the unfolded edges, roll the towel into a tight, neat roll. Stack the rolled towels on the shelves, with the folded end of the roll facing the front of the shelf. Hand towels and wash cloths can also be rolled or can be folded and neatly stacked. This method keeps the towels neatly in place. The rolled towels can also be placed in baskets in bathrooms to keep them handy. Separate towels that match the color scheme of each bathroom onto their own shelves and keep beach towels on their own shelf, to make sure all family members know which towels are okay to grab for outdoor fun.

Bedding

Bed linens are a challenge especially when there are several sizes in storage. Since they are large, when they unfold or unfurl they can make a cupboard messy in no time. To get bedding organized, first sort all of the bed linens into matching sets. Discard any that are no longer used or do not fit any of the beds in the house.

Neatly fold all of the sheets. Fitted sheets can be challenging to fold, but it is possible to do it neatly. Fold the sheet in half so that two top corners are lined up together and the two bottom corners are aligned. Lay the halved sheet on a flat surface, such as a bed and fold it into thirds, bringing each end with corners in toward the center. Since the third that remains has none of the elasticized corners, it should be easy to fold it into a fairly good square. Fold this square into fourths or thirds, to the desired size.

Once the sheets are folded, place the fitted sheet, flat sheet and cases for each set into one of the pillow cases of the set. Fold over the top of the pillow case to keep the other sheets inside. This keeps all of the pieces neatly together and makes them easy to stack neatly on the shelf. If there is space, devote a separate shelf to the bedding for each bed size in the household.
