Tips for Planning a Great First Date

The most crucial lesson to learn in the first-dating circuit is to always have a plan (and even a back-up plan). First dates can be hard enough, but there is nothing worse than jumping into the gauntlet unprepared. A well thought-out itinerary will start you off on the right foot, showing your date that, if nothing else, you are at least considerate. Being assertive and prepared will help things go smoothly and lend you a sense of confidence in your romantic endeavors.

For all dining concerns, whether you are eating out or in, make sure the restaurant or recipe you have chosen is either familiar or comes highly recommended. While trying to impress your date, remember that the fanciest restaurant may not always be your best bet. A casual setting will often put you both more at ease. Once again, try to make it memorable (i.e. do not even consider the Olive Garden as an option.) Instead, try something new that your date may not have tried before, like Ethiopian, Lebanese, or Asian fusion. New experiences can be fun and exciting, characteristics your date will probably end up associating with you as well.

Another suggestion is to get off the beaten path. Ditch the dinner-and-a-movie train and head outdoors. Taking advantage of your surroundings is a fun and affordable way to spice up a humdrum encounter and one that will set you apart from the rest. Find something accessible: the beach, mountains, or even a park- your date is sure to remember you for it. This can also provide a very intimate setting, one much more condusive to conversation that, say, a crowded bar.

If drinking is still on the agenda, make sure you put a little bit of thought into it. Search out a spot with live music, an art gallery, or even just a funky dÃ?©cor. By all means, avoid your local watering hole. Spending the evening with ten of your best drinking pals may not be your date’s idea of a good time. As nerve-wracking as the date might be, avoid the classic mistake of having one too many (first dates do not guarantee second chances!)

Keep these tips in mind and just be yourself. Above all, dating is supposed to be fun, so sit back and enjoy the ride!
