Tips on Minimizing Basement Condensation

Basements are notorious for humidity and condensation. There is a reason many basements smell of mildew and must. It is a haven for moisture. The best way to rid of the humidity issue is to eliminate the condensation. Although it is impossible to completely eliminate the problem, there are ways to minimize condensation in your basement.

Higher Temperature

If you raise the temperature in your basement you will have less humidity. This works on the same principle as burning off steam. You are literally, burning off the steam in your basement.

Exposed Dirt

New houses are known for their moist basements. One of the main reasons for this is the exposed dirt around the foundation. Dirt has a way of sucking in the maximum amount of water. If you have this problem, cover the dirt with plastic. This prevents water from seeping down into the ground right next to the foundation.

Insulation

Look around your basement walls. You will probably find that the area with the most condensation is near the cold water pipes. I remember when we first built our house, I went down in the basement and almost gasped. The wall that is next to a large cold water pipe was soaking wet. I thought we had a huge problem! However, there is an easy fix for this problem: insulation. Simply insulate around the water pipes. For even more protection, insulate the basement walls as well.

Exhaust Fan

Sometimes basements are humid due to a lack of ventilation. If this is the case in your home, install a basement exhaust fan. This will get fresh air moving to prevent further condensation.

Dryer Vent

Many homes have a clothes washer and dryer in the basement. If this is you, make sure your dryer does not vent directly into the basement. There is always extremely humid air that is emitted. Instead, install a vent outside of the house for your clothes dryer.

Dehumidifier

If nothing else works, try installing a dehumidifier. Although this will not take care of the root of the problem, dehumidifiers are designed specifically to remove moisture and condensation from the air. Be sure to check the dehumidifier often because they can quickly fill with water when in a humid area. You may have to empty it a few times a day during the wettest times.

Humidity is not only uncomfortable, but can also create odor over time. The last thing you want in your basement is an unpleasant odor. To minimize basement moisture and condensation, follow these simple tips for a dryer living space.
