Top Five Chick Flicks : Boat Accidents, Law School and Hookers, Oh My!
The following films are best enjoyed with a group of your closest girlfriends, who have a mutual appreciation for the type of film where in the midst of a tragic boat accident, the male lead is still able to profess his devotion to the woman he’s known for a mere two days-all while freezing to death in the Atlantic.
5. Titanic: This 1997 film written and directed by James Cameron was an unexpected love story from the director which brought viewers action movies such as Terminator and True Lies.
Titanic is a fictional love story that takes place aboard the true-life ship by the same name, which famously sank in 1912. Jack is a free-spirited artist; Rose is an upper class young woman engaged to a wealthy man named Cal. When Jack prevents Rose from committing suicide, they begin a passionate affair. This film may have won an Oscar for best visual effects, but it is Jack’s teasing yet romantic way with Rose that makes so many women swoon over this film.
4. The Sweetest Thing: 2002’s ultimate girlfriend movie, which places Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, and Selma Blair in the roles of three best friends living in San Francisco. The women in the film see the world as their playground and men as their toys; and when Cameron Diaz in the role of Christina meets Peter, she decides she is tired of playing games with men and sets off to track him down after their original chance meeting. Although the raunch factor in this film is high than most chick flicks, the interaction between the three best friends makes it the perfect film to watch with your best girlfriends.
3. Legally Blonde: Silly, frivolous, yet downright adorable are the qualities that make this 2001 film about a California sorority girl who goes to law school so appealing. Men may find the abundance of pink in main character Elle Wood’s wardrobe too much to handle, as well as the implausible story line, yet this feel good comedy about achieving your dreams-and looking good while doing so is the perfect girl power film.
2. When Harry Met Sally: This 1989 film written by the queen of chick flicks Nora Ephron (who’s other credits include Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and Bewitched) explores the relationship between friends Harry and Sally, and the classic question of whether a man and a woman can truly have a friendship without sex ruining it. This is the film that brought viewers the famous “orgasm in a diner” scene and the “I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out” speech. This type of chick flick is perfect to check out when feeling down about your love life because it shows that love can be found in the most unusual of circumstances.
1. Pretty Woman: As unlikely as it seems that a film about a hooker would be one that so many women find romantic and endearing, Garry Marshall manages to accomplish just that in this 1990 movie which co-stars Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. This fairytale-esque plot which portrays Richard Gere as Edward, the white knight who saves Robert’s character Vivian from her life of prostitution, works so well because of the chemistry between the leads and Vivian’s cheeky nature which makes the relationship humorous. For the past sixteen years since it’s release, this film has proven that it is the whole package when it comes to the chick flick genre and wholly deserves the number one spot on this list.
