Top National Cuisine Restaurants in Martinsville

When Golden Sun Chinese restaurant shut its doors in the early 1990’s, Martinsville Indiana lost a business that had been renowned for its authentic Asian cuisine and friendly atmosphere, but soon new Asian and Mexican restaurants came to our small town. The first, Number 1 (No. 1) arrived shortly before Golden Sun closed.

No. 1 Chinese Restaurant (765) 342-8078 is located on 1608 South Ohio Street in Martinsville, Indiana. It offers food in a dine-in or carry out style. This restaurant has probably the best Chinese food in Martinsville, all prepared to order in an open-style kitchen so you can see the cooks prepare your meal. I recommend the house special lo mein, with grilled noodles seasoned perfectly, pork, shrimp, beef, and chicken to compliment the thinly sliced mushrooms, leeks, and mixed Chinese vegetables. The house special lo mein is not really just a stir fry. It is quite delicious, grilled in a light broth and served generously for dining in, or packed in quart or pint boxes for takeout.

Another No. 1 Chinese restaurant masterpiece is the pu pu platter. No. 1’s pu pu platter typically contains enough dim sum for two; two spare ribs, two teriyaki beef sticks, two fried wonton dumplings, two jumbo batter dipped shrimp (sometimes prawn, sometimes just giant regular), six battered chicken nuggets, two springrolls, two crab Rangoon, and two egg rolls.

No. 1 does not use MSG, and their food tastes fresh and not greasy. Food is beautiful, tasteful, and correctly presented, with the Rangoon properly folded and the wonton a beautiful masterpiece. Items in the pu pu platter can vary, but are typically similar to what I have described, which is lovely for the appetizers. Expect to pay around $50-65 for food to feed a family of 5.

The dining room is brightly lit with large windows letting in light from outside. The kitchen style is open, with easy view of the cooks and staff. There is unfortunately no restroom available to diners. D©cor is tasteful and fun with large murals, tasty marquis showing the food menu, and simple touches accenting the restaurant. Tables and chairs are very clean and quite comfortable.

China Buffet is located at 195 Morton Avenue, Martinsville, Indiana. Their phone number is (765) 352-1688. China Buffet Morton Avenue was the second Chinese restaurant in Martinsville. Established by Peter and Hannah Dong (Americanized names), Chinese immigrants, the China Buffet once carried a wide range of Asian dishes from General Tso’s Chicken to classic grilled chicken teriyaki on a stick. Now, the restaurant has changed hands and the menu has changed as well, but staples like General Tso’s Chicken and the renowned chicken sticks with their rosy color are still available on the buffet.

China Buffet of Martinsville suffered slight damage from the 2003 tornado that tore up the K-mart plaza, but they returned with delicious Asian foods, still offering all-you-can-eat snow crab legs on the weekends for the dinner meal. I do not recommend going late at night; the best time to go to China Buffet is during busy hours. The buffet is not as diverse as one might prefer, but they experiment with different dishes regularly to keep customers pleased. I recommend the General Tso’s chicken, but the Rangoon is improperly folded and can be greasy if not fresh.

If buffet-style dining is not your thing, you can order fresh food cooked to order for takeout or dine in. Prices are fairly reasonable. Expect to pay under $40 for a family of five to have dinner, or under $30 for lunch.

The setting for China Buffet is quite dimly lit, and there are not a lot of decorative details. There is a large light-able murals over top of some applied directly to the wall. Although there are plenty of tables, some of the chairs have a little damage, so be sure to pay attention. The bathrooms are not great, and not extremely clean.

For exciting dining, consider Los Tres Caminos at 1890 South Ohio Street (765) 352-1015 next to Pizza hut. Their sizzling fajitas are amazing and the drinks. . . well this is truly authentic Mexican food. The food is delicious. There is nothing like a fresh, sizzling skillet with grilled shrimp, chicken, and beef in a mix of peppers. If you are more into burritos, this is definitely nothing like Taco bell.

Your burrito will come to you covered in a delicious sauce and white cheese. At Los Tres Caminos, the nachos arrive constantly, and you can ask for white cheese for dip or enjoy their delicious salsa. None of it is too spicy unless requested. If you want a soda, know that your coke will be tasty and perfectly mixed. If margaritas are your thing, Los Tres Caminos has a full bar and can mix you several types of yummy drinks or offer imported Mexican beer.

Decorations and style of the business is tasteful, and quite properly themed. It is nice and refreshing to see a Mexican restaurant look so authentic! Dessert is amazing. If you long for Mexican fried ice cream or flan, Los Tres Caminos will not disappoint. Plan on spending around $36 for a family of five.

Zhong Kang China Buffet has been around for a couple years. Located at the old first K-mart plaza, which is now home to Marsh supermarkets, Zhong Kang China Buffet offers a variety of Asian dishes on several buffets. The food is excellent when fresh. If it has been sitting for a while, like during late night, order takeout and be glad you did. Zhong Kang China Buffet offers the best Szechwan chicken to be had in all of Martinsville. The service is wonderful and the setting lovely.

With multiple buffets containing a mix of Asian foods, New China Buffet offers a variety of warm and cool dishes. There are more blended dishes than you would find at China buffet, two types of soup, and a small salad bar (which would basically be better described as a mix of greens with few toppings to compliment them.) New China Buffet does not offer quite as many varieties of dim sum, focusing efforts on various blended dishes. The Rangoon is a bit too sweet for my tastes.

The only problem is if you come at an hour with slow business, the food is disappointing. The soup is not always replaced and can get salty by the end of the day. In addition, I have come to New China Buffet and the buffet not been completely full. I worry about New China Buffet because they are often not very busy. The entire place is quite clean, bathrooms are nice, people are wonderful, and it is a great place to bring the family. Plan to pay under $30 for a family of five for lunch, and $38 for dinner.
