Unusual Decorating Ideas for a Teen Girl’s Room
Some things teens like are clothes, shoes, jewelry, make up and music. One suggestion for decorating in a unique way is to glue or otherwise attach these items to the walls, ceiling, light switch and headboard. Unused cd’s make perfect coasters and wind chimes. Flip-flops and sandals, no longer worn, can be attached to look as though they are climbing a wall. Sew pockets onto the lampshades and shirts onto the curtains. Shirts can also be scrunched onto a rod by threading the rod through the sleeves. Staple or otherwise affix jeans, belts, suspenders, colorful socks and even jewelry to the ceiling. Other things to attach to walls and ceilings are envelopes, books, pencils, purses, stuffed animals or old album covers.
Scarves are gorgeous when used for decorating. Tie one or more to the chain on a ceiling fan and allow it to dangle in the center of the room. Hang one or two over the existing lampshade. Tie several together, end to end, and attach the two ends of the arrangement to a wall. Use colorful clothes pins to hang photos, jewelry and purses. Tie scarves around doorknobs and allow to hang or wrap scarf all the way around for a whole new look to the knob.
Fasten sheets to the ceiling, with the bed in the corner, to form a curtain around the bed. Or place the bed in the center of the room and sew four sheets or lace pieces together into a giant rectangle. Find the center of the fabric and attach it to a point over the middle of the bed. Allow to drape all the way around the bed, to the floor.
Use foam sheets to fashion dolphins, dollar signs, giant coins, flowers or other shapes into wall border. Glue or otherwise affix the shapes around the baseboards or the top wall edge. The foam can be found in large sheets perfect for cutting out shapes of people, animals and words for the walls. Other cool ways to use foam is to cut out foot shapes and glue them to the floor, cut pieces for night stand tops, cut out flowers and glue them all over the bed and dressers or cut them into picture frames and attach them to mirrors.
Small details can really look cool. Use play coins to place in the recessed part of certain types of doorknobs, and paper money to affix in various locations around the room. Decoupage the paper money onto trash can, end table or dresser. To prevent ruining good furniture, arrange the money or other flat objects onto the table or dresser top then cover with a large pane of glass. These decorating tips are great for a younger child’s room. For a teen’s room purchase paper money that looks almost real then use it as wallpaper for a whole wall or the entire room.
Mask off squares and other shapes with tape then paint the wall. Use molding pieces to outline the shapes. The girl can use the shapes to attach photos which will appear as if they are framed. It’s easy for the teen to change the pictures at any time. Hang netting or lace on a wall and use clips of all sorts to attach photos and other memorabilia. Or attach netting to the ceiling and hang anything lots of items or just leave as is.
Make your own faux fur rugs by using fusible webbing to affix the fur to rubber backing. Other cool ways to use fur are as a throw for the bed, a cover for an end table, to make giant letters for wall hanging, or even to glue to a lamp base.
