Updating Your Bathroom for Under $100
The first step to any decorating project is to assess what you already have and decide what you want from the space. Are the cabinets in poor shape, does the faucet need to be replaced, are the light fixtures inadequate? Are you hoping to have a relaxing retreat or a bright spot to really wake you up in the morning? Once you know what you need and want, then you’re ready to start making some decisions.
Updating your light fixtures, faucets and hardware can make a huge difference in a small space. It can also take up a good chunk of your budget. Shop the hardware mega-stores, keep an eye out for sales and remember to check the clearance areas. If your cabinets are looking dated, sand them down, prime them and add a couple of coats of paint. You can spray paint your hardware if you can’t afford to replace it.
If your towels are still in good shape, keep them but look for a new shower curtain to coordinate. A solid color will allow you to change the wall color more easily in the future and won’t get dated as quickly. Something with pattern or bright colors will give you a bigger punch. Shower curtain still looks fine? Get yourself some new towels instead in new colors. Solid color accessories are generally less expensive, but if you don’t have to buy any new fixtures or a whole new set of towels, splurge on some really dramatic accessories. Don’t forget the rug and don’t limit yourself to the bath department when looking for rugs. Do remember, though, that other rugs aren’t as absorbent as rugs made specifically for the bath nor are they backed with rubber to prevent water soaking through and sliding. If you’re looking for a spa feel, go with neutrals-shades of white, tans, or even very pale blue, green or yellow. Want to wake up quickly-use bright colors, vivid patterns. Looking for elegance? Choose deep, rich jewel tones.
One of the cheapest and most dramatic ways to change the look of your bathroom is to paint. Your color choice will depend on your shower curtain and what mood you’re trying to achieve. Don’t be afraid to go bold; bathrooms are small and can handle it. Because of their size, bathrooms are also a great place to experiment. If you’re not happy with the result it doesn’t cost much or take long to change it.
Now take a look around your house. What can you use in the bathroom? Old boxes, pressed glassware, vintage jars and bottles, clay pots, silver trays, vases, orphan plates, baskets and even seashells can all be used to corral all of those necessities and create ambiance. Don’t forget the walls-family pictures, an array of mirrors, inexpensive prints from the discount store can all finish off the room. Because of the humidity, be sure that you don’t use anything under glass that is too valuable.
The key to getting a great room for under $100 is to take your time, watch for sales, only replace what really doesn’t work, and be sure to add your own personality by shopping in your own home.
