Vacation Horror Story

This is not the story of one vacation, but a trend that happened during the first years with my now husband!

We live in the New Jersey area and decided to go up to New York City for a long weekend. My husband (boyfriend at the time) had made arrangements for us to stay at Hilton Times Square. It was fabulous. We stayed in a suite on the 42nd floor. The view was incredible. He had gotten us ticket to the Broadway show “Rent” for an evening show and also to an off Broadway show, “Over the River and Through the Woods” for the afternoon.

We decided to grab a bite to eat between the shows and then headed over to see “Rent”. Half way through the show, I started to feel my face flushing and felt warm. I ignored it, and enjoyed the rest of the show. We strolled back to the hotel hand in hand and went up to our room. As we looked out at our amazing view, he leaned in to tell me for the very first time that he loved me. My response was, “I think I’m going to be sick!” I was! It wasn’t a pretty sick, it was an all night long sick! Getting sick and having bathroom issues was not how I wanted to respond to an “I love you” moment! I had to soak in the bath just to help control my chills! He was patient, loving and kind.

About a year later, amazingly enough I hadn’t scared him away; we went out to Arizona for a week’s vacation taking in Sedona, Phoenix and Tuscan. We had an incredible vacation and the night before our flight stayed in a delightful little casita at a posh resort. He had gone all out when planning this trip and it wasn’t lost on me. We decided to go get a couple of steaks at a local saloon and then head back to pack up for our flight the next day. Unfortunately the steaks didn’t settle too well, and I got violently ill. I was violently ill for 48 hours! He had to call the airline and change our reservations, make arrangements with the hotel to let us stay in the casita we were in, as I was unable to move. He should have learned. He was patient, loving and kind.

The following year, we planned our wedding on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. We rented a beautiful house on the beach and were planning a two week vacation. We drove down separately because I had to work late the first day of our trip. That evening I got down to the beach house safely and enjoyed a leisurely night with my husband to be. I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d rather spend my time with. I was thrilled I was going to be marrying the man that I love. You guessed it, that evening I was horribly sick. He took it in stride, and even though we were in a massive five bedroom house, when he saw that I went and curled up on the loveseat to sleep, he curled up on the sofa right next to me. We slept that way. I knew I would live happily ever after with this man. We did marry, we are crazy in love and I topped off my vacation with one of the worst sunburns I ever have experienced!

Traveling has gotten better for us now that we are married! It’s been three years and I’m doing fine!
