Website Appeals to Subscribers for Assistance to Katrina Pets

Dogster.com has asked their members for urgent help moving rescued animals from Hurricane Katrina disaster areas to safe havens out of state.

“We are so impressed with the efforts our members and the rescue organizations have made to coordinate relief, fundraiser, increase awareness, foster stranded pets,” said Ted Rheingold, Dogster founder. “The disaster has left thousands of dogs and cats stranded, scared, and in need of assistance. With food needs mostly met, for agencies like the ASPCA, Humane Society, American Veterinarian Medical Association, Animal Welfare Institute, and many, many more the primary need is meeting the long-term housing needs of the displaced animals.”

Organizations like the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty To Animals (ASPCA) still need help financially and the volunteering of time and energy. For more information, go to dogster.com/site_updates.

You can also use Dogster’s “Hurricane Katrina” and “Adoption and Rescue” forums to share more relief organizations and helpful information with the community.

“Since this is now a national problem you can also call any local SPCA of most any animal shelter and just ask Ã?¯Ã?¿Ã?½What can I do to help?'” said Rheingold. “Dogster is tiny but we’re doing all we can to help and give hope to those in the affected Gulf States area.”

Other websites who are assisting animals from the disaster are Noah’s Wish, IFAW, United Animal Nations, Pet Finder, BRAT in Texas, Best Friends, North Shore Animal League, American Veterinary Foundation Medical Assistance Teams, Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, New Orleans LA SPCA, AKC, Pasado Rescue, Peninsula Humane Society, Kinship Circle Letter Campaigns, and others. Links to these and other agencies helping are listed on the dogster.com site.

Dad’s Pet Care is Dogster’s first site-wide sponsor for their websites of Dogster and Catster.

“Today when I was at the grooming salon where I work someone was talking about the pets left behind during Hurricane Katrina,” said a Dogster member.

“I just couldn’t leave my baby Xena behind,” said another Dogster subscriber. “I feel bad for those animals that couldn’t go with their owners. We’re in California (San Francisco Bay Area) so our threat is earthquakes.”

Every week Dogster celebrates another breed and this week it is Chow Chows.

You can also enter an animal sweepstakes on the site.

Modern Dog Magazine recently featured Dogster in an article and staff took Dogster management to the Bark and White Ball.
