What Women Were Instrumental for the Fight for Independence in the American Colonies?

During the Revolutionary times there were some very important women who held prominent roles and whose actions were instrumental in the fight for gaining independence from the British. These women include Betsy Ross, Agigail Adams, Mary Hays and Sybil Ludington.

Betsy Ross was an important women who worked as a sewer her entire life. When the founding fathers approached her with the idea of making a flag for a new nation. She agreed and created the flag of the United States of America. Betsy Ross used her own imagination and creative design to make each part of the flag symbolic of the new nation. There are thirteen stripes representing the thirteen colonies.

The next important woman was Abigail Adams, who at the time was the soon to be first lady of the second United States President John Adams. Abigail Adams was considered to be very smart as she helped her husband make important decisions concerning the future of the new nation. She also provided him with support and helped him with important decisions when he served in the office of the presidency. Abigail Adams also was one of the first women to advocate equal rights between men and women.

Mary Hays is also known as “Molly Pitcher.” Her fame came as a doctor and nurse on the battlefields. She would run and bring the soldiers fighting in the Revolutionary War water so that they could get more energy and not dehydrate under their heavy battle armor.

The final woman was Sybil Ludington. She is not that famous nor is she written in most history books but she was very famous to Paul Revere who is famous for his midnight ride and poem about him. Sybil Ludington at the young age of 16 rode all around town on the night that the British were attacking to warn the people that the British were coming.

After the times of the Revolutionary War and during the women’s movement for equlity in the United States, two other women stick out as leaders of the movement. They were Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucricia Mott. These two women held rallies, posted fliers, held meetings and raised all the support they could get for women to fight for equal rights and the right to vote in society. Through their efforts, women got the right to vote with the 17th amendment and got fair and equal treatment in society.
