What to Know When Tiling on Your Own

Choosing the proper materials.

When choosing tile, be sure to choose either glazed or unglazed ceramic types because of their durability. While their surface is cold for one’s feet and often slippery when damp, they are the most effective for long-term reasoning. While being water repellant; they can have various finishes including satin and matte.

Deciding on the proper installation method.

Choosing the proper way to install is equally as important as choosing the proper materials. Tiles can be installed by being set directly within mortar atop a concrete slab or plywood floor. This is more sturdy, yet more expensive. Another method includes application within a concrete backboard (subfloor) while using a thin-set adhesive.

Choosing the proper layout.

The best way to ensure a proper layout is to draw a floor plan of the room you are tiling. Various tile calculators are available to help you as well. Before you begin to lay them out, make sure they are compact; many people enjoy creating a pattern by using different colors.

Getting the job done.

Whatever method you choose, the job can be completed successfully and within 4 hours (maximum). For the concrete backboard method, mix your thinset by adding a couple inches of water to a bucket and place it where you intend to install a tile. If you are setting the tiles directly, simply place enough adhesive to the area and place the tile atop it.

NOTE: Depending on the surface you are installing on there may be other preparations you need to complete before begin your tile job.

Finishing touches

After the adhesive has been in place for 24 hour, glout should be applied so to keep tiles in place. Use a sponge to avoid excess glout. Proper timing with this job is important. If you begin to wash the glout too soon, then the joints may wash down as well. However, if too much time surpasses, then cleaning the tiles will not be easy. Ultimately, the weather influences this; if it is hot, it will dry quickly. After this, most manufacturer’s suggest that the tile sets another 24 hours before being walked on.
