Where Are the Liberals?

I’ve recently discovered talk radio station KFTK 97.1, which is a FOX radio affiliate, and consequently carries national and local conservative hosts. The conservative talk radio phenomenon has swept the nation since the early 1990s, chiefly thanks to Rush Limbaugh and the “Contract with Americans” Republican Revolution of Newt Gingrich. Limbaugh and other like minded conservative talk radio hosts would explain the explosion of conservative talk radio as a response to the liberally biased media. While. I will grant that the liberal causes have many friends in the national media, such as Dan Rather and Tom Brokaw, the conservative movement has had its fair share as well, such as Stone Phillips and Bill O’Reilly.

What caught my attention, though, was the fact that not all the shows on KFTK were nationally broadcasted; some were local shows. This caused me to wonder where the liberals are in local media. The local broadcast TV news seems to be balanced – they go after everybody. Certainly there are some fringe elements out there, like Lizz Brown. And, there are progressive elements, which tend to have a liberal slant, such as KDHX 88.1’s The Wire and Collateral Damage. But, where is the liberal equivalent to KFTK – hard cord, no holds barred, in-depth analysis of the topics of the day from a liberal perspective, of course?
