Where to Get Soul Food in Largo, Maryland

I’m in the mood for some smothered fried chicken, collard greens, candied yams and a big glass of ice tea. Maybe I’ll get me some barbequed ribs or maybe some pork chops instead. Mama and Grandma are not the only people who can whip up a good home cooked meal these days. There are many soul food restaurants all across the country that serve all of your favorite southern meals. However, there are lots of places that try to recreate a cuisine that originated in the south but fall short due to a real lack of knowledge of what soul food really is. In Largo Maryland (where I live), there are a few soul food restaurants that stand above the imposter restaurants.

Soul Fixins’ is a new restaurant, built within the Capital Centre Boulevard shopping center. I am only a few minutes away the shopping center so Soul Fixins’ is usually my first choice when I am in the mood for some soul food. At Soul Fixins’, you can choose from several entrees like meatloaf, fried chicken, barbeque ribs, and catfish. Collard greens, okra, and candied yams (to name a few) are great sides to compliment your entrÃ?©e. Every dinner is served with a piece of sweet cornbread which happens to be my favorite. Soul Fixins’ is a carry-out restaurant but has a table for those who choose to sit down and eat inside. From Mondays thru Thursday, Soul Fixins’ is open from 8am to 9pm and 8am to 10pm on Fridays and Saturday. On Sunday, Soul Fixins’ opens at 9am and closes at 7pm.

Levi’s Restaurant and Catering has some of the best barbeque ribs I’ve ever tasted (besides the ribs my father makes). This soul food restaurant serves in a cafeteria style format with a separate room in-house dining. Although Levi’s specializes primarily in barbeque, there are many southern favorites to choose from such as the fried chicken with mumbo sauce and the North Carolina style BBQ. Levi’s does catering for parties and special dinners as well. Levi’s Restaurant and catering can be a little pricey, but every meal is definitely worth it.

Also located in the Capital Center Boulevard shopping center is the Stonefish Grill. The Stonefish Grill is primarily a seafood restaurant but serves a southern style soul food as well. Now I’ve been to the Stonefish Grill once and I was impress by the sassy style of the place. The Stonefish Grill is pretty expensive; definitely the type of restaurant for a first date impression.

Carolina Kitchen is another one of my favorite soul food spots. My recommended choices at the Carolina Kitchen are the Rotisserie Quarter Chicken, Moms Meatloaf, Southern Fried Pork chops, and the Blackened Catfish. Macaroni and Cheese, String Beans, Black Eye Peas, Baked Beans, and Cold Slaw are just a few of the many sides that can be added to your entr©e.
