Winter Craft Ideas: Tin Snowman Lawn Art

For a whimsical outdoor decoration this winter, consider this tin snowman lawn art project! Add additional details as desired for a fun lawn accessory.

For this project, you will need:

– Large tin coffee can

– Tin snips

– Work gloves

– Small hammer

– Medium grit sandpaper

– Large snowman shaped stencil

– Fine tipped permanent marker

– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss White

– Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black

– Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Glow Orange

– Small scrap of red cloth

– Adhesive spray

– White glitter

– Hot glue gun and glue sticks

– Metal garden stake

– Newspaper or large drop cloth (plastic or fabric)

Start by first covering your work area with a large amount of newspaper or a large plastic or fabric drop cloth. Remove both ends from a large tin coffee can. Make sure the can is clean and free from any coffee grounds. Wearing work gloves, carefully cut vertically up the side of the can with tin snips. Flatten the tin into a sheet by using a small hammer.

Place the large snowman shaped stencil flat on the tin coffee can sheet. Trace the image with a fine tipped permanent marker. Cut out the snowman image with tin snips. Gently sand the edge of the snowman shape using medium grit sandpaper. (This should dull the sharpness of the tin just a bit.)

Spray the tin with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss White. Let the snowman dry for fifteen to twenty minutes before adding a second coat. Dry for three to four hours.

Add “coal” details to your snowman by drawing them on with Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black. Add a “carrot” nose design with Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Glow Orange. Allow the detail painting to dry an additional two to three hours.

Spray the painted snowman shape with a bit of adhesive spray. Add a light dusting of white glitter; not too much but just enough to enhance the detail of the tin snowman. Shake off any excess glitter.

Heat up the hot glue gun. Glue on the strip of scrap red cloth to appear like a “scarf” on your snowman. Adhere the metal garden stake to the back of the tin snowman. Once the glue has dried, stick in the ground outside.
