Winter Remodeling Projects to Keep the Doldrums Away

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that you have to be locked in your home with a cup of cocoa, or Jack Daniels, whichever your taste may encompass. There are many fun and exciting projects you can do to improve your home and even if you can’t do it yourself, any contractor will be happy to help you with one of the ideas I will propose below. Personally, I like to sit and sulk with my cocoa and Jack, but to each his own.

Install New Carpet
This is a project that is easily accomplished and can be completed in the winter. If you have any DIY skills whatsoever, you may even be able to take care of it yourself. Change colors, create a whole new scheme. Have fun with it. The only drawback is that you must be extra careful after trudging through the thick tundra and entering your home. Winter can be one of the dirtiest times of the year, so be sure you have a safe place to put your boots well before you reach the new carpeting.

Remodel Your Kitchen
There is nothing stopping you from remodeling the kitchen in the winter. This is the perfect long-term project that could keep you busy for the entire season. Go for broke and get new appliances, new tile, new cabinets and counters. Do it all and before you know it, spring will be here and baseball will be in full swing.

Remodel Your Basement
Aren’t you tired of sulking with your whiskey in front of everyone? You know you have been thinking about creating your own getaway where you can relax and hang out and be yourself where the wife and kids can’t bother you. You know that the basement is sitting there storing old yard sale clothes and broken down tricycles while it could be carpeted, paneled, painted, and decorated into a perfect den where you can get away from it all.

Upgrade your Electronics
You’ve been wanting that 60″ plasma TV now for months and it never seems like the right time to buy it. Winter is the time. Upgrade and install your home theater. If you are having trouble convincing your wife, just run your hands through your hair and stare at her intently while doing your best Jack Nicholson impression from The Shining by telling her, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy…” Then give her an eerie half-smile.

Install New Lighting
This is not the best of the five winter projects, but it is one that will keep your wife happy after scaring the wits out of her with your frightening impressions. Buy her that new chandelier she has wanted for the dining room and add a few table lamps to complement. This is easily done and nothing can stop you.

I hope you enjoy these tips on winter home remodeling as a good way to keep that Seasonal Affective Disorder at bay. For me, myself, it’s time to pour me another drink and sleep for the next 16 hours.
