Wooden Square Decor for Any Room

The great thing about unfinished furniture or wooden pieces is that they’re cheap and the decor choice is yours. Colors, paints, stains, images – mix and match to make the piece uniquely your own. At most craft stores, you’ll find 4″x4″ wooden squares – or other sizes – that make it easy to do decorative projects for your home at a very small cost. Since these thick blocks of wood cost only about fifty cents each you’ll want to buy plenty so that you have new decor pieces for every room of the house.

Of course, depending upon the project you have in mind, you’re free to choose smaller or larger wooden pieces, but the 4″x4″ wooden squares are perfect for many quick projects. Paint each one a different color, add rub-on appliques, and spell your child’s name across one wall of his or her room. Or, purchase a second wooden piece, shaped like the initial of your last name, and make a monogram for your fireplace mantle. Emboss it with gold leafing and it’ll be a beautiful addition to your decor. Instead of flat wooden pieces you can find other decorative pieces in wrought iron, brass – even copper.

Wooden blocks can be decorated in so many different ways that there’s no limit to what you can do. You can use a wood burning tool to carve images and designs, stain the wood your choice of shades, then add brass touches, cover in fabric, add on intricate stickers, glue on novelties, or just spray paint. Additional flat wooden pieces make it easy to add a boat, apple, ladybug, animal, shell or other images to the wooden square. Simply paint the flat piece and attach it to the wooden square.

Decorate wooden squares in your choice of colors or themes, then nail or glue them to the corners of door or window frames. The squares give the window or door more dimension and add a touch of elegance to the room. This decoration can be done to mantles, head or footboards, bookcases, cabinets, or a door itself. Add one wooden piece to each corner and the door takes on a completely different look.

Use the squares to make a unique border for a room. Stamp on Native American images, nautical images, flowers, or even photos. Cut pictures from glossy magazines and glue them to the squares, or use personal photos from your collection.

It’s easy to glue a decorated wooden square to many things you already have in your home, like the front of a hamper, a baby crib, the corners of an end table, the corners of a mirror, a cedar chest, canisters or an entertainment center.

You’ll find hundreds of options for decorating the squares when you visit a large craft store. They have project sheets to help you, or choose from all the notions they have, like gold paint pens, mosaic tiles, rub-on initials, fabric appliques, lace doilies, crafting foils, metallic or pearl paints, flat beads, silk flowers, tin shapes, or leather pieces. Or, check out their selection of scrapbook papers that offer you a huge choice of images to cut and paste to the squares.

You can decorate the wooden squares cheaply, by simply painting them, or a little more elaborately, by spending a couple or three bucks on a nice decoration for the square. Either way, the wooden squares will add depth, dimension and beauty to any decor.
