Workplace Smoking Bans: What You Should and Shouldn’t Do

Smoking bans are popping up all across the country. A number of states and cities in the United States have placed bans on smoking in public places. Even though some cities may not have a smoking ban, there are many workplaces that are enforcing their own smoking bans. This has left a large number of smokers wondering what they will do.

When a business or individuals puts a smoking ban in place they often wish to end smoking altogether. Telling or asking someone to quit smoking is easy to do, but it is the quitting part that is difficult. A large number of workers, all across the country, have been put in a difficult situation due to workplace smoking bans. If you are one of those individuals then there are a number of things that you can do.

One of the first thoughts that often enters the mind is to fight the smoking ban. No matter how many smokers you get together it is likely that a protest will not do any good. There are a large number of non-smokers who are out there looking for a job. You do not want to put your job or your future at risk just because you do not approve of a smoking ban. It is also expected that in the future smoking bans will cover the United States; therefore, most businesses will not back down.

Almost all businesses will inform their employees of a smoking ban ahead of time. They do this so smoking employees will be able to prepare for the ban. If you are an employee of a company who is about to impose a smoking ban you should take measures to try and quit smoking. Many individuals just hope the ban will go away; therefore, they do not try and quit.

Most employers give their employees notice of a smoking ban because most individuals understand that it is difficult to quit smoking. Since your employer is likely to realize this they may offer support groups or offer assistance in obtaining items used to quit smoking. The gum, pills, and other items that offer smoking assistance do not come cheap. If you feel that you have a problem with smoking you and other smokers may want to encourage your employer to offer all employees assistance while they try and quit smoking.

Before you take action, you may also want to know what type of smoking ban is in place or will be in place. Most businesses are prohibiting smoking on their property. This means that you may have to walk down the street if you want to smoke. Others may give employees the ability to smoke in their own vehicles. Of course, the best way to stay healthy is to stop smoking, but not all people can stop, especially without assistance.
