World Film Forum at West Lafayette,Indiana

West Lafayette, home of Purdue University is the place to be to experience cultures from around the globe. With Purdue’s international student community growing every year, West Lafayette is getting to experience the best from around the world, from cuisine to films, from music to belly dancing. If you are an international movie fan living in West Lafayette, this fall is going to be an exciting month for you.

Purdue University ‘s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is organizing a World Film forum to show international movies to local audience and the students. The forum will feature three films from , and . The films will have English subtitles and are free and open for public.

Interesting feature of the forum is that Purdue professors will introduce the films and later lead the discussions. This, to increase understanding of the culture of the nation represented and the context of the movie. The schedule released by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is as follows:

On September 14, French movie “Cache” (Hidden, 2005) will be shown. The movie’s story is based of ‘s relationship with and the massacre of nearly 200 Algerians in 1961 in Paris by the French security forces, when they were participating is a peaceful demonstration. Assistant professor of French, Paula Leverage will introduce the film and lead the discussions.

On October 12, Spanish film “El CorazÃ?³n del Guerrero” (Heart of the Warrior, 2000) about a teenager’s fantasy will be shown. Professor of Apnish Patricia Hart will introduce the movie and lead the discussions.

And on November 16, German film “Triumph des Willens” (Triumph of the Will, 1935). This film from Nazi Germany is a portrayal of the Nazi party’s convention in Nuremberg. Directed by Leni Riefenstahl, this film was awarded gold medal in

Venicein 1935 and the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937. But after the end of Second World War this film was widely condemned and it is said this film destroyed Leni’s career. Fritz Cohen, professor emeritus of German will present the film.

Scheduled time for movie screen is at 5:30 p.m. at the West Lafayette Public Library, 208 W. Columbia St.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Purdue has both Graduate and Undergraduate degree programs. Undergraduate majors offered are:
