X-Men 3 the Last Stand

The X-Men are back and despite what some critics have said about the film it is one of the must see movies of the summer. Setting records in the box office on its opening weekend which was even more surprising since it was a Memorial Day weekend opening but that didn’t dissuade movie goers. The film is expected to be the last in the X-men franchise but I suspect that we will see more of the X-men in the next years to come.

So of course first thing everyone was freaking about was that Brian Singer the director of the first two movies didn’t stay on for the third, he is busy with a man of steal (the new Superman for you slow people). Brian Singer did a great job and yes he is one of the best, but don’t fear, there is still plenty of action and story line from new director Brett Ratner. Don’t let the “new” fool you Brett Ratner is only new to the X-men movies, he has had plenty of experience directing. I have to admit I thought that a few scenes could have been better done and probably would have been if Singer directed. One scene I thought could have been better was the highway scene where Magneto (Ian McKellen) takes on a convoy to save the lovely Mystique (Rebecca Romijn). It seemed to cartoonish, since I am not a director I cant say I could have done it better but I have faith that Singer might have had a little more to bring to the table then Ratner.

Of course all of the staple characters are back, Professor Xavier (Patrick Stuart), Storm (Halle Berry), Rogue (Anna Paquin), and even Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) comes back, but she is back as Phoenix, an out of control version of the once lovely Jean Grey. And of course the favorite X-man of them all Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), who is still just as vicious and well played as before. I have to give Jackman credit he has played Wolverine perfectly, so well done that they have even created a movie based on Wolverine, set to come out in 2007.

So enough talk about who is in the movie, let’s talk about why this movie is great. I like how they have introduced some mutants, Beast (played surprisingly by Kelsey Grammer), Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones), and Angel (Ben Foster) are all new mutants in X3. Most of them have smaller parts and their characters aren’t developed but I suspect they will be in the next movie (if there is one). I also like that they developed further on the characters that started to come into their own in the second movie. We see a lot more of Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) and Pyro (Aaron Stanford) who both play a much larger part in this movie, and again are at each others throats.

All the characters play their part in making the movie flow along nicely, and the staple characters of course make the movie amazing. Wolverine is back and is trying to save Jean Grey who he believes is still the woman he loves and not what everyone else believes her to be, a murderous, un-controllable, destructive mutant who cares for no one else but her own wants and desires. Magneto is back and as bad as ever, he is determined to stop the humans and their so called “cure” for mutants. The cure is a biomedical drug that stops the mutant gene, and it comes from a mutant called Leech.

There is plenty of story here and lots of action that will have you entertained throughout the entire movie. My only complaint about the film is that it doesn’t have any slow down so you can feel for the characters and their struggles. Also they left some characters out of the movie namely Night Crawler who played a big part in X2 but he is no where to be seen in X3. Fast paced with a lot of action is good but some parts need to be more developed with dialog and character interaction. Over all Pratt did a fine job on directing X3 and some cool special effects, he moved the entire Golden Gate Bridge for a fight scene. And again great writing to make a good story, and always excellent acting, you have Jackman, Berry, Paquin, and McKellen, what more could you ask for.

Go see X-men The Last Stand you won’t be disappointed.
