You Need a Contractor? You Need Some Help!
In our day of technology, many reputable contractors will have a website explaining the products and services they are willing to provide for a new home build or a home improvement project. These websites are monitored by the BBB, Better Business Bureau, online. The BBB records any problems reported in association with an online website.
In addition to the online presence, contractors should always have a physical contact address. This address should not be a PO Box. One of the most popular scams is associated with contractors and other service providers asking for the monies to be sent to a Post Office box only to never appear when the time comes to start the job.
The local Chamber of Commerce is another great place to search for any problems reported with a business. The Chamber will have records of all members of the business community. If the contractor is a true business person, they will have a license, insurance and a verifiable background.
The license is probably the most important business tool a contractor can have. Contractors are often a part of various online and offline organizations including, but not limited to the American General Contractors of America. The contractor background will be traceable through the license number. If the contractor does not have a license, do not use that contractor.
The job of the contractor is to gather together other workers to complete a job. These various contractors will need to be licensed and insured as well. The insurance is there to cover not only your belongings and your home, but you in the case of injury on the job.
The contractor is the person in charge of your home build, home improvement project and your money. Before entrusting anyone with your home, make sure to check out their background and their previous job. You need to know more about them then they know about contracting.
