ZYPREXA – – – – – DESCRIPTION, USES and SIDE EFFECTS

Zyprexa is a drug with the generic name Olanzapine. Zyprexa is a psychotropic agent.

Zyprexa is insoluble in water and it is a yellowish crystalline solid. Zyprexa tablets are intended to be taken orally. Zyprexa tablets contain Olanzapine in 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg. It also contains some non-active ingredients.

Zyprexa tablets dissolve in the mouth instantly allowing the content to be taken even without water.

ZYPREXA ZYDIS which is oral disintegrating tablets is meant for oral use only.

There is ZYPREXA INTRAMUSCULAR which is an injection. This is to be taken through intramuscular use. It contains 10mg of Olanzapine.

Zyprexa is use in the treatment of schizophrenia. It can be use in short term treatment of schizophrenia about 6 weeks. And can also be use for maintaining the stable state of schizophrenia patients who have responded to Zyprexa oral solution.

The oral Zyprexa has also been use in bipolar disorder treatment in acute mixed or manic episode.

Zyprexa may also be use for maintenance of monotherapy. It is use in treating agitation associated with schizophrenia and bipolar 1 disorder.

When Zyprexa is being use in treating schizophrenia, a once a day dose of 10mg should be administered. This may be increase to 15mg incase of bipolar disorder and maintenance of monotherapy.

Inject Zyprexa intramuscular slowly and deep into the muscular mass not the subcutaneous layer. Dissolve the vial content into 2.1ml of injection water to provide 5mg of Olanzapine and use immediately within an hour.

Zyprexa is supplied in blue colors for 2.5- 10mg Olanzapine, while 20mg Olanzapine is pink in color.

Store Zyprexa products in room temperature range of 20-25degree C.

Some side effects of Zyprexa intakes are; dizziness, postural hypotension, constipation, weight gain, personality disorder, akathisia, dry mouth, asthenia, dyspepsia, somnolence, increase in appetite, tremor. Also accidental injuries, back ache, ecchymosis, rhinitis, and cough.

Zyprexa increases mortality in elderly ones. Zyprexa may cause stroke in elderly, also diabetes.

Zyprexa should not be taken with alcohol. Nursing mother should not take it and pregnant women should talk to their doctors before taking Zyprexa.
