    Proactiv

It is one of the best acne treatments. Proactiv acne care system uses prescription grade benzoyl peroxide which works as a peeling agent thus helping in clearing skin pores and reducing bacterial count.

Following the Proactiv skin treatment, you can not only get rid of acne but can also maintain a healthier skin and can be bought from a local pharmacy or a drug store without prescription.

Proactiv includes renewing cleanser, revitalizing toner and repairing lotion. The renewing cleanser kills bacteria and clears skin pores, the revitalizing toner helps in removing dead cells from the skin and finally the repairing lotion kills any left over bacteria and helps the skin to heal quickly.

According to its creators Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, Proactiv not only helps you get rid of acne but also helps in preventing it from coming back.

    Accutane

Unlike Proactiv, accutane can only be bought on a dermatologist’s prescription because it has strong medicinal properties. It comes in tablet form and dermatologists prescribe accutane in only the most severe cases of acne.

Although it is a very effective treatment, yet it has some serious side effects as well. Headache, nosebleed, joint or muscle pain and the worst of all birth defects in the unborn baby if accutane is taken during pregnancy are some of the side effects.

    Retin-A

Retin-A is also a prescription based drug. Retinoic acid and tretinoin are the two active ingredients of Retin-A and these ingredients help to bring oil and dirt blockages to the surface of the skin pores. Just like Proactiv, it not only helps get rid of acne but also prevents it from coming back in future. Retin-A slowly erodes the top layer of skin and that is the reason why the treatment takes several weeks.

Excessive dryness, redness and initial skin breakout are the side effects of using Retin-A.
