Difference between Egg Roll and Spring Roll

Be it spring roll or egg roll, you will simply fall in love with these sumptous and colorful appetizers. They are commonly served in the Chinese restaurants all around the world.

Spring rolls and egg rolls are quiet alike as they are tubular (cylindrical) in shape, wrapped in crusty wrapper and rich filling on the inside. Moreover, the recipes of these Chinese appetizers are more or less same. These similarities between the two rolls make it difficult for majority of people to differentiate between them. It is only when one is able to see both egg roll and spring roll side by side that he/she would be able to understand the differences.

An egg roll is a large and stuffed Chinese pastry that is usually dished up as a dinner dish or an appetizer. In it, nicely minced meat and vegetables are wrapped in a deep fried crispy outer crust, which is made up of water, salt, egg and dough. A spring roll, on the other hand, is a smaller, filled, and rolled appetizer. It is more delicate and healthy version of an egg roll. It is traditionally served on the eve of Chinese New Year.

The roll wrapper (outer crust) of an egg roll is a little thicker. Spring roll’s wrapper is a bit thin and often translucent.

Spring rolls are a bit sweetened as compared to the traditional egg rolls.

Egg rolls are always served hot where as spring rolls can be served both hot and cold. Moreover, the former is always fried, while the latter can be deep fried as well as steamed.

An egg roll is larger in size as compared to a typical spring roll.

    Spring Roll

    Spring roll is defined as “an Asian snack of rice paper stuffed with shredded vegetables and meat.” Its’ crunchy covering adds a crispy texture. It is mostly recognized as a first course (appetizer) in Asian culture. Steam it for moist texture and fry it for a crusty feel. The latest versions of spring roll contains noodles. It is popular and eaten almost all over the globe.
