Difference between Jati and Varna
Jati and Varna are two different names that are used to discuss the Indian social system. Many people remain confused in an effort to understand the Indian social system as it is classified into different small and big social classifications. Through the passage of time and advancement of studies towards development of equal classes, these are antiquated systems are slowly dying but still their impact on the overall growth of Indians especially Hindus can still be felt today. Both of these would later help develop the caste system which is quite prevalent throughout the Indian subcontinent. Jati basically is considered a subdivision of the different communities while Varna is even older concept of social system of classes. Varna has four major classifications which include Brahmins, Kshatriyas,Vaishyas and Shudras. Jati has divisions based on the profession of an individual.

Jati
Jati is considered subdivision of the different communities. This system was greatly discouraged but still for many years, Indian Hindus suffered intensely. In Jati social class system, if someone has the status of Brahmin, he or she enjoys great powers within society. Some historians say that Varna led to the development of Jati. It is also called a system within the Varna system. The trade or professions are also a big part of Jati system as it evolved through different social activities. For years, many Indians reformers tried hard to convey the message that people should not follow these class systems and live in harmony with total equality. It is very important to mention here that Jati class system slowly evolved and degraded into today’s caste system.

Varna
Varna is considered an even older concept of social system or classes than Jati. This system, unlike in Jati, used to consider an individual through personal traits and attributes. On the other hand, this system also impacts an individual’s chances for upward mobility and at the same time appreciates that you should not change your identity of social class in which you were born. Varna’s development has also led to modern caste system. This system is very old while studies show that this system was relatively more acceptable than Jati in India.
