Difference between Kappa and Nupe

The words Kappa and Nupe don’t ring a bell with most people. In fact, if you mentioned them in front of a group of people most of them would assume you are making words up. This is because both these words are not actual English words. Kappa and Nupe are terms which are used by African Americans in reference to groups which they form during their university life. However, these two words are still overlapped and mixed up far too many times, which is why it is essential to know how they differ from one another.

A few decades ago, most African American students went on to join colleges and universities. However, these students were often subjected to a lot of racism and they were almost always picked on. As a protest against this racist behavior which was shown against them, ten of these students went on to form a society which was known as Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. This fraternity was formed in 1911 on January 5th. This fraternity went on to celebrate its hundredth year of existence in 2011.

This fraternity, despite being formed to fight against racism, had very high standards. It only accepted the best students out there and didn’t open its doors to just about anyone. In order to become a member of this fraternity you have to have a GPA of at least a 2.5 out of 4. This GPA was not very easy to achieve, given the high standards of education in colleges. At the same time, if you wanted to be an alumnus of the fraternity you had to hold a bachelor’s degree at least.

Kappa is basically just the shortened version of the name of the fraternity which these students went on to form. While on the other hand, Nupe is the name given to a member who joined the Kappa.
