Difference between Name Brand and Generic Drugs

As medical science advances, there have been a lot of improvements in the medications that we use. There are now medications available for health problems that were previously thought to be incurable. We see that new research is coming out everyday and helping in improving these medications.

Generally there are two types of medications that are available in the pharmacies. These are the brand name drugs and generic drugs. They both are good for health and work well though some doctors prefer branded drugs over the generic under the premise that the former are more effective.

However, there is no proof that the generic drugs will not work as well as the brand name ones. The formulas that are used in both are the same. There can be a slight variation on the basis of how the additives are added but the basic medicine remains the same.

As the name implies, brand name drugs comes from big number pharmaceuticals that make profits in billions of dollars each year. On the other hand, the generic drugs are made by relatively less known companies who obviously are not earning as much.

The difference in profits is quite a bit as well and the branded drugs can sometimes be several times in price in comparison with the generic drugs with the same medicine. Brand names are also easily available everywhere where as the generic ones are not available at all times in many pharmacies.
