Difference between Prilosec and Nexium

We live in a day and age in which there are many health related problems that are taking a toll on us. Many of these problems route from our habits as well as lifestyle. Technology truly has helped us by making our lives easier but at the same time, we have stopped taking care of our health due to the ease that is available to us.

One of the many organs that are getting damaged is the stomach. Since we eat overly refined foods and products that are digestive system finds hard to process, our stomach takes the maximum pounding.

One of the more commonly used medications for this are Prilosec and Nexium. They both have their common features as well as subtle differences.

Apart from being used for gastric trouble, Nexium is also used for Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome which Prilosec is not. There are similarities in the side effects, however, Nexium causes dry mouth which does not happen with Prilosec.

One other major difference between the two is that Nexium is only available with a prescription while Prilosec is available over the counter. Thus, the availability of the latter is easier as well.

    Nexium

    Nexium is one of the most used medications in the world for gastric trouble. It is used for many gastric issues. The salt that is used in it is Esomeprazole. The side effects include nausea, headache, constipation as well as dry mouth.

    The medication is available in 20 and 40 milligrams capsules and is generally taken once a day. It is a prescription only drug and cannot be acquired with a prescription from a doctor. It is generally administered for four to eight weeks though it can be longer if the doctor thinks it is needed to be used for a longer period.

    Prilosec

    Prilosec is one of the common used drugs for gastric reflux disease. The salt used in it is Omeprazole. Its side effects include headache, nausea, constipation and gasses.

    Generally it is used once a day by the patient and comes in dosage of 10, 20 and 49 milligrams. It is not a prescription drug and therefore can be acquired without the doctor’s suggestion over the counter. Generally it is used for the long term to treat the patient’s condition.
