Sitting in the sun for a long time can damage your skin and create wrinkles or other marks that can make you look old. Often this damage is irreversible and now the medical community is voicing concerns over sun exposure especially amongst the youth. They are now recommending the use of sunblock or sunscreen if you are going to spend any amount of time out in the sun.

    It is now recommended that sunblock or sunscreen should be used once a person leaves home during bright sunshine. The two terms are used together as synonyms. These are often present in a lotion or cream formula. However, there are certain differences between the two.

    The first difference is that sunblock does not protect against UVA rays whereas sunscreen does. The active ingredients in sunblock are generally titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. On the other hand, the active ingredient in sunscreen is Parsol 1789.

    It is made from inorganic ingredients that reflect the UVB rays and protects your skin by scattering and deflecting these harmful rays. Due to the nature of the ingredients, sunblock generally does not irritate the skin. However, it does not absorb the UV rays.

    It protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. It is also known as sunburn cream and suncream along with other names. Sunscreen works by absorbing some of the rays and reflecting others.

    It is available in the shape of lotion, gel or cream and is easily available in stores. One should wear it when spending time in bright sunlight to protect skin from its harmful effects.
