Difference Between Tortellini and Ravioli

Italian food is known for its variety and taste all over the world. Tortellini and Ravioli are two Italian recipes for making pasta. Although both tortellini and ravioli are pastas, there are a number of differences between the two. For instance, the two pastas differ from each other in terms of shape. Tortellini is round in shape and has a hole in its centre. It is the shape of tortellini which gives it the nickname ‘belly button’. On the other hand, Ravioli is square in shape and does not have a hole in its centre. Moreover, unlike tortellini, ravioli does not have a nickname.

Shape is not the only difference between the two pasta types. It is believed that ravioli was originated in the Italian city of Venice whereas there are a number of legends related to the place of origin of tortellini. However, the most popular legend related to the origin of tortellini claims that this Italian dish was first made in Castelfranco Emilia, a small town in the Italian province of Modena.

Yet another difference between ravioli and tortellini is the time of origin. It is believed that the former originated in the 14th century. As is the case with place of origin, there is a controversy about the time of origin of tortellini. However, the most common theory is that tortellini originated in the 17th century when it was made in the shape of a turtle. It is claimed that the original shape of tortellini was an effort at replicating Modena’s architectural features.

Last, but not the least, tortellini and ravioli can be differentiated from each other with respect to their global popularity. A close study of worldwide trends reveals that ravioli is globally more popular as compared to tortellini.
