Difference Between Unethical and Illegal

If you travel frequently worldwide, you will definitely be aware of how laws and ethics vary from place to place. You have to make necessary adjustments in order to abide by the rules and regulations of a particular region otherwise you will have to suffer some serious consequences.

For example, betting is legal in most of the European countries and it is absolutely legal to gamble on different sports. However, when you talk about some of the Asian countries like India and Pakistan, you will not be allowed to consider this as a business and will be punished under different laws set by the local authorities.

Similarly, one has to be aware of ethical values, when travelling to different places. Although one doesn’t get penalised for not following such practices, yet he/she can lose respect amongst friends, colleagues and family members.

The first major different between illegal and unethical is that every former act is always unethical. Let’s say a person is involved in various crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and fraud. Once he gets caught, there will be punishment for him according to the laws of the country. These acts are not only illegal, but they are also known to be unethical.

On the other hand, all unethical acts are not illegal. For example, buying pornography in some countries is unethical, but no one can be punished over it even in those countries, as it is not an unlawful act.

So, this also clears out another thing that whenever you commit an unlawful act, you will have to bear the consequences for it like submitting a fine or going to jail, depending on the crime you have committed. On the other hand, you will not be penalised for unethical behaviour.

Whenever someone commits an illegal act, it can be detected easily. For example, if a bank is robbed, it will not go unnoticed. The media will spread the news all over the world, especially if it is a big robbery. Compared to that, unethical acts cannot be detected that easily, as they have more to do with an individual and don’t affect others. Moreover, they are mostly done in private, so no one notices them at all.
