Difference Between Viral Marketing and Conventional Marketing

Marketing is a huge part of any business operation and deals with all aspects related to the product or services from its inception and finally delivery to the end user as it deals with all the allied matters in between. Often the term is used for the purpose of explaining sales promotion or advertising which is one of the most important parts of marketing.

The promotion is done through various channels and the basis of it is the human nature of curiosity to know. The word gets out and people follow it and often end up using the product or service just to see how it goes even if they do not need it.

There are many concepts that are related to marketing but the two that are used quite commonly these days are conventional marketing and viral marketing. The way these two go about performing the same job is totally different and both work in certain cases.

    Conventional marketing has been around for as long as marketing has been around. On the other hand, viral marketing is a fairly recent phenomenon and the term itself comes from the internet where term “goes viral” is used a number of times.

    Conventional marketing utilizes tools that have been tried and tested over decades and an attempt is made to reach out to every possible consumer for the product or service. Viral marketing works more on word of mouth where some people are taken in the loop and they spread the word.

    There are various channels that are used by conventional marketing in order to get the word out. Whereas viral marketing relies heavily on the spreading of the word through the internet in order to achieve success.

    Viral Marketing

    It is a kind of unstructured marketing that is used to promote a product or service through spreading word of mouth. Initially it can be controlled but once it starts taking the snowball effect, it is up to people who are spreading it as to how they take it.

    The content that goes out initially is produced by the marketers but once it leaves them, they have no control over it. It is generally used for a short term and there are no guarantees of success and one cannot be certain about how much success will be achieved.

    Conventional Marketing

    This type of marketing engages the traditional tools for promoting a product or service. The outreach is global and through various channels that have been tried and tested. There is a great control on the whole campaign maintained by the marketing department and they do have a good idea of the measure of success that may be achieved.
