Facebook Buys Face.Com

Finally all the rumors about Facebook’s acquisition of Face.com have turned true. The social networking giant Facebook has officially announced the acquisition of facial recognition service, Face.com. However, terms and conditions are yet to be revealed. This news was announced on Monday.

Reports about this acquisition surfaced last month stating Facebook is going to purchase Face.com for about $100 million. Although Face.com has made this news public on its company blog, but details are not yet released regarding the official price yet.

Face.com, the photo recognition site, offers preeminent facial recognition service which enable users to tag photos and find images online. The website was launched in 2007, and is considered to be the world’s best facial recognition software.

“People who use Facebook enjoy sharing photos and memories with their friends, and Face.com’s technology has helped to provide the best photo experience,” said Ashley Zandy, a Facebook spokeswoman, in an e-mailed statement. “This transaction simply brings a world-class team and a longtime technology vendor in house.”

Although, both the companies haven’t yet revealed what exactly they will bring together a glimpse about future plans is given in a blog post by Face.com, “We love building products, and like out friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people’s lives as they both create and consume content, and share content with their social graph,” the blog post says.

Looking at the previous Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram and the launch of its own Facebook camera for iPhone, it’s quite obvious that Facebook is turning a lot more attention to mobile photo-sharing. Face.com’ acquisition will certainly facilitate Facebook users to tag photos faster on their mobile devices.

On the other hand, Face.com ensures all the developers that it will continue working with them. These developers were using the company’s technology in their applications.
