First Woman to Join Facebook Board of Directors

Facebook has decided to appoint its Chief Operation Officer Sheryl Sandberg to company’s seven-person board of directors. She has become the first woman to join this platform.

Sandberg joined as COO at Facebook in 2008, and has played a key role in guiding Facebook on IPO in May 2012. She was previously working as Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google, where she was working on generating revenue from online advertising. Her current job at Facebook is to look after company’s business operations, which include sales, marketing, public policy and communications.

Facebook’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement: “Sheryl has been my partner in running Facebook and has been central to our growth and success over the years. Her understanding of our mission and long-term opportunity, and her experience both at Facebook and on public company boards makes her a natural fit for our board.”

Ms Sandberg, a 42 years old elegant woman, transformed Facebook into the mogul it is now, helping it start its IPO, which eventually makes some millionaires and others billionaires.

She is a Harvard graduate and holds a degree in economics. Sandberg has been a candid advocate for women in the workplace, particularly when it comes to higher management while encouraging women in TED talks and other events.

At a TEDWoman conference in December 2010, she talked about the present climate of women in the workforce.

She said: ‘Women are not making it to the top. A hundred and ninety heads of state; nine are women.’

In addition, Sandberg is a board member for The Walt Disney Company, Women for Women International, the Center for Global Development and V-Day.

Sandberg will soon join to the company’s board of directors, which includes Mark Zuckerberg, Peter Thiel, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, Washington Post Company CEO Donald Graham, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Ex-president of University of North Carolina Erskine Bowles, and investor Jim Breyer of Accel Partners.
