How to Add an Attention on Mailing Envelopes

It is never a good idea to mail an envelope without marking it to a particular person’s attention. Adding an attention proves really helpful in reaching  the concerned person quickly.

Almost all the mail received by a business company is distributed through the mailing room or the front desk. If the name of one specific person is not clearly mentioned on the envelope, the letter will be sent to the general department.

Imagine you have written a letter to a company about the marketing irregularities. The concerned person is the marketing manager and if you have marked an attention to his name, the letter will go straight to him.

Otherwise, things could become really awkward. The letter will go to the front desk officer, who may take even days in determining the purpose of the letter and the relevant person.

Knowing how to add an attention is extremely important. Many people make a stupid mistake by confusing the personal address and the attention message. The idea behind adding an attention is to give a direction to the mailing room, so the envelop reaches the right hands at the right time.

Things required:

– Personnel directory (for the receiving business or school)
– Permanent ink pen or marker
– Extra envelope (if needed)

Make sure that the address you are writing on the envelope is completely correct. There should be no spelling mistake in the name of the person whom you are addressing.

If you don’t have a directory, contact the main switchboard of the place, and get the correct spellings of the complete address.

After writing the address of the receiving person, add your personal address to the envelope. It should be written on the other side of the envelope. In case the envelope does not reach the destination, it will help the post department to send it back to you.

Make sure you have written both addresses in large and clear words. Using capital letters is also very important.

It is the time to add the attention. To do this, write ‘ATTN’ or ‘ATTENTION’ right above the first line of the address you are sending the envelope to.

After writing ATTN or ATTENTION, add the name of the person in capital letters. For example, you are required to write ‘ATTN JOHN SMITH’, if you want to reach Mr John Smith.
