How to Add Visual Effects to a Home Movie
Even a fine homemade video will look boring without visual effects. These effects add a lot of beauty to the movie and polish the stuff which looks really dull otherwise. Since you are working a homemade movie, no Hollywood type visual effects are needed.
A lot of simple visual effects can be added easily. There are no professional expertises required and all you need is a little creativity. It is not a good idea to think of visual effects after shooting the entire movie; plan all the visual effects before turning on your shooting camera.

First of all, you need to set up a studio to capture the video as well as video effects. The studio should be large enough to place all the necessary equipment.

2
Make a detailed list of visual effects that you want to add to your movie. Since you are not a professional editor, you would find it really difficult to add effects after the recording. Identify the moments where effects are required before hand.

To add a windy visual effect, use any large floor fan. The fan should be placed at one side of the character, and it should be out of the camera frame. Adjust the fan’s speed according to your requirement. Start shooting for the effect only after you are satisfied with the result.

Use different lights to create interesting lighting effects. Even a simple table lump can help you achieve plenty of dramatic effects. You just need to use bulbs of different colours to add a special touch. If you want to create the effect of a haunted house, push the power button time and again.

To add special fictitious effects after the recording, you need a good editing software program. You will find a tutorial DVD along with the program. Watch the video, and see how different effects can be added. There are many editing software available these days, which are compatible both with Microsoft Windows as well as Apple’s operating system.
Through good editing, you can manipulate the footage significantly. For this, transfer the video from camera to the computer.
