How To Apply Automatic Eyeliner

For women who are busy and on the go, stopping to sharpen a pencil eyeliner can be a pain. In addition to the time it takes up, and the mess the pencil shavings create, wooden pencils can be dangerous – if any splinters sticking out of the pointed end pierce the sensitive eye area, you’re looking at a major case of puffy red eyes, and at worst an infection.

Enter the automatic eyeliner. A convenient tool to keep in your handbag, automatic eyeliners eliminates the need for sharpeners, as they are self-sharpening. Every time the tip becomes dull and wears away, users can simply force up more eyeliner through the pencil’s body mechanically, by twisting the pencil (much like lipstick). These products come in disposable types, although some companies provide eyeliner casings that can be refilled.

Applying this type of eyeliner can be a cinch, as it is far easier to use than liquid liner. For this, all you require is an automatic eyeliner from your favourite brand, and a well-lit mirror.

Instructions

  • 1

Begin by twisting up some of the eyeliner, bringing up nearly 1/8 of an inch of the actual liner. While there are no exact measurements for how much eyeliner you need to twist up, be careful not to force out too much, as too long a point will cause the liner to snap and break as you attempt to apply it.

Next, hold the pencil at a 45-degree angle, and begin to rub it gently on the back of your hand. This will accomplish two things; firstly, it will sharpen the automatic eyeliner tip, until it forms a smooth point (this type of liner tends to be squared off when it is first twisted up), and secondly, it will warm up the liner, in order to ensure that the application process is smooth and flowing.

To begin the application, use your mirror, and gently hold the automatic eyeliner as you would a pen. Close your eye, so that the eyelid is smooth and uncreased, and begin to dot it gently along the lash line on your eyelid. Don’t panic if you do not get it right the first time – you can always go over the eye again, and fill in any gaps you might have left the first time around. Repeat the same process on the other eye.

Finally, replace the cap on the eyeliner, and use the smudger provided at the other tip of the automatic eyeliner pencil, to smooth out and streamline the dots over your lash line. Do this by holding the product, yet again, like a pen, and running the smudger gently over the dots to create a flowing, symmetrical line. Repeat the same procedure on the other eye, and you’re good to go.
