How To Apply Cream Blush

Blush can be a great way to bring a subtle hint of colour to your face and accentuate your cheekbones, and when combined with suitable eye makeup and done up lips, makes for a killer look. However, sometimes powder blush tends to give your skin a dry, cakey, and artificial look, which can appear highly unpleasant when viewed up close.

Cream blush can be a suitable alternative to the powder kind, and in addition to moistening and moisturising the skin, gives it a fresh, young, and dewy look if applied properly. While the cream variety is rising in popularity, it is far more difficult to use than powder blush which can simply be swiped on to the skin with a brush, so don’t count on a perfect result the first time you use it. Instead, practice and experiment, and make sure you get comfortable with it before using it for an event.

Instructions

  • 1

Begin by selecting a shade which complements your skin tone and type. Cream blushes tend to work well for normal to dry skin, but can be a bit tricky to manage on oily skin, as they can increase the oiliness. Consult the assistant at your makeup counter to ensure you select a suitable cream blush.

Wash your hands and cleanse your face before you begin. Start by dipping your finger into the product, and taking out a small amount – a little bit of cream blush goes a long way, so don’t use too much.

  • 3

Start dabbing the cream blush along your cheekbone lightly, putting on three to four dots. Once this is done, start patting the dots with your fingertips – this will warm the cream blush, and make it easier to spread.

  • 4

Pat and swipe gently, moving upwards towards your temple and swirling and blending it into your skin until the product is completely absorbed. Cream blushes are usually highly pigmented, so go easy with the product – it is meant to be applied in layers, and built slowly, not overloaded on to the skin in one go, as that will create an unpleasant cakey effect.

  • 5

Start slow and easy – check to see if you like the effect after your first go, and if the colour is still too light for your liking after the first application, you can always layer it, and apply another coat. Simply repeat the process if you like, until you achieve the desired colour and intensity.
