How to Ask a Loved One to Donate a Kidney

It is natural to start feeling depressed and hopeless after getting the news from the doctor that your kidneys have stopped functioning and that you need a kidney transplant. Even after you go through an extensive testing, there is a strong likelihood that you would find yourself getting placed on a long list of kidney transplant recipients, with every single name on the list as desperate for a kidney match and consequently transplant as you.

In times like these, you can try to ask a loved one to donate a kidney to you, so that you can get off the waiting list and have the transplant as soon as possible. This, of course, would require a fair bit of convincing, but since it is a loved one that you are talking to, remain optimistic about your chances to succeed.

Look for the right moment to bring up the topic. Make sure your loved one is fully aware of your health condition and the state that your kidneys are in. If they do not have an extensive knowledge about your kidney disease or failure, let them know. Not only do they deserve to know about that state that you are in, they will most likely want to help you in your fight against the disease and staying alive in any way they can.

Tell your loved one that you are left with no choice but to go for a kidney transplant. Tell them that you have explored other options with your doctors, but they all are convinced that the only way to ensure your survival is to get a new kidney. In some cases, your loved one would immediately offer to give you their kidney. However, if they do not make such an offer, do not be discouraged and continue to remain patient.
