How to Be Prepared for a Tornado
Tornadoes are very dangerous and have been responsible for killing hundreds of people in the past. They are vicious and can destroy neighbourhoods in a matter of minutes. There have been huge losses in the past and the main reason has been that the people were not prepared for the disaster.
There is no specific time on which a tornado strikes so you need to be prepared beforehand. Try to develop a detailed disaster plan with your family so that the children have the knowledge of what to do in the event of emergency.

1
Stay informed
It is vital to stay informed for the moment when the tornado arrives. Contact your community centre for the latest reports and watch the news regularly to determine the exact time. You can also use the internet to stay updated as news channels and weather centre websites provide constant reporting. -
2
Make a disaster plan with your family
Develop a detailed disaster plan with all members of your family so that they are prepared for the tornado. Discuss each and every aspect and clearly define the locations where each and every member of the family will meet at the time of the tornado. You should also allocate a secondary location in case somebody is unable to reach the first one.
Staying in the basement is the best option but if you do not have one, choose the hallway of the house where there are no windows or glass doors. -
3
Prepare a supply kit
You should prepare a supply kit beforehand in case of any emergency. The supply kit should include food supplies, water bottles, first-aid kit, blankets, flashlights and a radio that works on battery. It is always good to make a list of items in advance so that you do not miss anything. Make sure you have enough food supplies to last for a day. -
4
Conduct practice drills
It is very important to conduct practice drills with your family for the tornado. This will give you a clear idea of what to do and what not to.
