How to Break a Tie Game in Soccer
Soccer is one of the most widely played sports in the entire world at current status. It is being played in almost all parts of the world without any exception and people simply admire it. The game is so widely played because it is great entertainment and is very eye catching. The game has its beauty because it is a brief one and is very interesting over the course of the time. The game has 90 minutes in total split over two equal halves of 45 minutes each. A 15 minute interval is given to the players after the completion of the first 45 minutes so that they can rest and get sorted out with their managers. Soccer may have friendly matches and competitive games both. The two are different in the nature in which it is being contested. The friendly games do not have that flair, where as the competitive matches are often ferociously contested and the intensity is great, to go along with the atmosphere. A tie may also result after the 90 minutes of allotted times. To deal with this matter, the official governing body (FIFA) has several formats to choose a winner and break the tie if the score is level after the allotted time.

The first format is to choose the option of a golden goal. In this criterion, both the teams are given a further 30 minutes to contest. These are also divided in 15 minutes halves and the team to score first wins the game. Even if there is still time left, the match ends and the team which has scored the goal will walk away as winners.

However, if both the teams are still level after the golden time, the game will be taken to the penalty kicks. In this, each team will be given 5 penalties and the team that scores more on these 5 spot kicks wins the game.

If the game is still tied after the 5 penalty kicks, both the teams enter the phase of sudden death. In this criterion, the team that scores first and stops the penalty from the other team to end in the back of the net wins the contest.

A classic form of extra time is also one method used to break the tie between the two teams. In this, both the teams are given 30 extra minutes divided into two halves and the golden goal is not accounted for. Both the teams can score several times in these minutes and the score line is weighed after the whole passage of 30 minutes of extra time. However, if the scores are still level after these 30 minutes, again the teams have to be separated by the lottery of penalty kicks.
