Instructions

  • 1

Make the dog lie at your feet

The first thing you need to do is make the dog lie at your feet. In case the dog is not large in size, you can put it on your lap. You can also make the dog lie in an open area, if you are not comfortable with the previous two things.

  • 2

    Pick a metal comb

Take a metal comb, as that will be ideal to get rid of the mats in your dog’s hair. None of the other types of combs will get the job done properly.

  • 3

    Start combing

If the matting situation is manageable, you can pick any area on the body of your pet and start combing. In case the hair is badly tangled, you should start from under the ears, as that is the most difficult part.

  • 4

    Divide hair into smaller segments

By dividing the hair into small segments, you will easily manage to get rid of the mats. Remember to work on the edges of the hair, as that is where the real problem lies.

  • 5

    Comb gently

If you comb vigorously, you might end up hurting the dog, so remember to gently comb your pet. Moreover, ask someone else to continue patting the dog, so that it stays calm.

  • 6

    Pull mats apart

Use your fingers to pull the mats apart and then comb the affected area.

  • 7

    Give treats to your dog

In order to keep the dog relaxed, continue giving it treats periodically. Also, you should treat your pet, when all of the mats are removed.

  • 8

    Shampoo your dog

Once all of the mats are combed out, shampoo your pet in order to make the hair smooth.
