How to Build a Fixed-Gear Road Bike

Fixed-gear bikes are very easy to ride as compared to the conventional bicycle. If you cannot afford to buy a new fixed-gear bike, you can build one of your own by following a simple procedure. If you are looking forward to build your own fixed-gear bike, you can take help from the given steps.

Things Required:

– Road bike with horizontal dropouts
– Wrenches, metric set up to 15mm
– Rear wheel with a fixed gear hub
– 3/32 inch rear cog
– Cog lock ring
– Pencil and paper
– Repair stand
– Chain whip
– Hex wrenches: metric up to 8mm
– Chain tool
– Calliper or ruler
– Lock ring wrench
– Grease
– Bottom bracket removal tool
– Crank puller
– Bottom bracket installation tool
– Crank arms, chain ring and bottom bracket
– Torque wrench

    First of all, you have to select a bicycle which has horizontal rear or track ends. Then, take a ride on that bicycle in order to assess which gear combination will suit you. Furthermore, you have to know the measurement of the crank according to your height and weight.

    Place the bicycle on the repair stand and remove the rear derailleur, shifters, front derailleur, chains and wheels. After that, you have to take out the bottom bracket and crank arms. Then, take the measurements of the rear dropouts spacing.

    Now, you have to choose a rear wheel which has a hub with a locknut dimension which matches the rear dropout spacing. Clean the hub and apply some grease on it. Then, tighten the chain ring after placing the cog in the hob. Take a lock ring wrench and install the lock ring. Clean the excess grease from the hub.

    Then, you have to measure and record the rear wheel chain line. You should select a bottom bracket and crank arm combination which will give you the measurement of one millimetre within the rear chain line.

    Now, you have to install the chain ring, pedals along with the bracket and crank arms. Tighten every bolt and clean the excessive grease. After that, you have installs the real wheel of the bicycle. Then, tighten the bolt after finding the right place to break the chain.

    Loosen the rear axle, adjust it and then tighten the bolts completely. Now, take a ride and check whether everything is working in the right way or not.
