In areas where crime is high and there is inadequate security to protect you and your loved ones in case anything goes wrong and a break-in occurs, safe rooms play a major role in safety of the residents and allowing you to stay in there for days at a time.
Safe rooms are also essential in government buildings and for high profile government officials in case of war or any other unfortunate situation.

Choose the Location
In order to build a safe room, you need to know where it should be located. The safe room should be somewhere you can go to quickly in case of an emergency and not be located on a floor separate to where you are located. There should be no windows and a solid core exterior door. Install a high-end deadbolt along with replacing the screws with longer and stronger ones. -

Walls
The walls of a safe room in your house need to be reinforced with Kevlar, sheets of steel and even bullet proof fiberglass to not only keep you safe from the intruders, but also soundproof it in order to freely talk and communicate with the outside world. This is the most important part of building a safe room in your house as it will separate you from the danger that lurks outside. -

It would be best if you are able to keep the room at such a thickness where mobile phones are still able to work on the inside, but if not, it is crucial that you have a telephone line separate from the one in the house installed on the inside. When you have a safe room in your house, it is crucial that you have cameras installed in important spots in and around your house that can be monitored from the inside of the panic room as well to see what is going on around your property. -

If there is a need of using the room for days at a time, the need for having a backup generator and proper ventilation is extremely important and will allow you to continue communicating with the outside world along with monitoring your home.
