How To Build a Trash Can Composter

Putting biodegradable products such as pieces of food, paper and yard waste in a waste bin until they literally rot is called composting. The material obtained after composting is widely used as an additive to soil in order to hold essential elements such as minerals and moisture within the soil.

Building a trash can composter is as simple as pie. You will probably need to buy only a trash bin. The rest should be readily available.

Things Required:

– A trash bin
– 1 to 5 gallons of mud
– Earthworms (optional)
– 1 to 2 litters of water
– A place to store the composter

Instructions

  • 1

If you do not have a spare trash can at home, purchase one from a local hardware shop. A trash bin with a lid will work better because a composter can stink a lot at times. The lid will ensure that the smell does not spread in the surroundings and stays within the composter.

Depending on the size of the trash can you selected, add anywhere between one to five gallons of mud to the trash can.

  • 3

If you want to speed up the composting process, you can introduce earthworms into the composter.

  • 4

Water can also help in speeding up the biodegradation process. Again, depending on the size of the composter, add one to two litters of water to the composter.

  • 5

Warm temperature one of the most important factors for quick completion of the composting process. So make sure you put the composter in a place where the temperature is generally warm such as basement or garage in your home.

  • 6

Add products such as leftover food particles and scraps, yard waste and useless paper to the composter. You can add any biodegradable product to the composter as long as it is useless for you.

  • 7

When the biodegradation process is complete, a nutritional dirt-like product will remain which is best for use in garden soil for increased soil fertility. You can go ahead and spread pr mix the compost in your garden soil to make it rich with nutrients and minerals.
