1
Make sure the kittens are orphaned or abandoned
It is strongly recommended that you make sure the kittens are orphaned or abandoned. It might be possible that their mother has gone for scavenging or to get food for them. In case the kittens are dirty, continuously crying and their place of living is covered with soil then they are orphaned. On the other hand, if the kittens are clean and calm, they are not abandoned. -
2
Warm the kittens
After finding the orphaned kittens, you need to keep them warm. You can take them to a veterinarian where you will find incubators that keep the kittens warm. Instead of an incubator, you can place a hot water bottle with the kittens or place a wrapped heating pad with them. -
3
Check the health of the kittens
It is very important that you check the health of the orphaned kittens. Taking them to a veterinarian is the best way to get a proper diagnosis on their health. Remember that a vet will let you know if the kittens are dehydrated and he or she will treat them accordingly. In case you are fostering the kittens, you can always contact your local shelter who will help you in the cost of food and supplies. -
4
Get a nursing kit and kitten formula
You need to buy a nursing kit and kitten formula. A nursing kit includes a bottle, many nipples and a brush for cleaning. It is advised to sterilize everything before using the nursing kit. Next, you need to give each kitten 8cc of formula per ounce of body weight. Before giving any formula to the orphaned kittens, it should be properly warmed. -
5
Wash kittens after feeding
After feeding the orphaned kittens, it is a good idea to take a warm damp washcloth and gently clean them. Remember to apply the washcloth on the kittens like their mother would do i.e. by using short strokes. You can also use a hairdryer set on mild for a few minutes to help dry the kittens after cleaning.
