Papillon has a silky coat of hair which is very soft. You have to brush it regularly, at least twice a week. Make sure that you brush out any mats that have developed especially in areas like behind the ears, inside the thighs where there are more chances of hair being tangled. Use a soft brush to smooth out the hair. However, when it comes to a mat, use your fingers for untangling it. Brushing also gives your dog a cleaner and neater look. Brushing also helps in increasing the blood circulation in the body as it is a kind of massage for the dog.

It is very important that you brush your Papillon’s teeth regularly, not just for his own hygiene but also for yourself. You can get a dog toothbrush and paste available in most pet stores and brush the teeth like you do your own. It will take time to train the dog in staying calm while you brush their teeth. If you do not brush regularly, tartar will develop on the teeth leading to decay and gum disease.

Depending on your lifestyle, give your Papillon a good wash when he shows signs of sweat and dirt. A tub with a shower attachment is the best place for a bath. While you bathe the dog, avoid getting water in the ear canal as it will be hard to take it out and can lead to an infection. Make sure that you comb the dog before bathing. Otherwise any mats present will just harden out and will be difficult to untangle.

You can also take your dog to a professional that specialises in bathing and cleaning pets. You can find many that can come to your home to take care of your dog. This is a good idea so that your dog does not get stressed out by having to go to a strange place. It is also a good idea to take your dog to a veterinarian for regular checkups as he or she will be in a much better position to guide you on the health of your dog.
