How to Change the Default Printer
You can change the standard publishing printer to any other printer that you have linked with your computer. This will make your publishing and printing tasks easier, since you can choose the most frequently used publishing device to be the standard or default device. The guidelines, tips and techniques given below will work best with Microsoft Windows. For those who are using other operating systems including the Apple Mac IOS they will need to use different guidelines.

Before doing anything else, you will need to make sure that you have some basic computer skills to change the default printer for your computer. You will be required to pay attention to details and follow the right procedure to perform this task. Remember to refer to the 'Help' sections in your operating system and you can also refer to the operating manual of your specific printer to get further assistance in changing the default printer.

Now turn on your computer and wait for Windows to load. Enter your control panel username and password to access the desktop of your computer. Now find the start up menu at the bottom left hand side of the home screen. Click the start up menu and then click the control panel option to change the settings of your computer.

In the control panel window, choose the Printer icon and another window will appear in front of you. This window will show details, date of creation and icons of all printers that have been installed on to your computer. Choose the printer you want to use as the default printer. A new menu window will appear as you choose the printer of your choice.

Find the Set as Default button at the bottom of the window and click on this button to send the command. It is extremely important to make sure that you chose the correct printer as the default. This can be done by right clicking on the printer icon again. Find the check mark right before the Default printer. If the printer of your choice is not checked as the default printer of your computer, consider making the appropriate changes.

Once you have set a publishing device as the standard, you can still print documents and reports from other set up printers. The Print discussion box provides you a choice each time you send a publishing command, but the standard publishing device will be the one that will print the documents for you instantly.
