How to Choose the Right Vehicle for Towing Your RV

An RV (recreational vehicle) is a motor vehicle which has a living space and other amenities which are found in the house. You can easily take your family and friends on long trips on your RV. Selecting the right vehicle to tow your RV is quite a complicated task as you have to consider a lot of things which mainly include its weight bearing capacity, brakes, frame type, transmission, engine type and drive train. Furthermore, you will find it really difficult to test any of the vehicles because dealers don’t allow it. So, you will have to do it all by yourself.

Instructions

  • 1

    Trailer weight

First of all, you have to determine the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle. In addition, you must determine the weight of your RV. Then, compare the weights of both the vehicles to check their towing compatibility. It is extremely important for you to note that you don’t have to use the weight of your RV which is given on its manual as you will load it with other stuff after buying. You can use a public scale to note the weight of your RV.

  • 2

    Frame type

Vehicles have two types of frame which include full-frame and unit-body. The traditional trucks are the most common examples of full-frame and are good for towing the big RVs. In contrast, the unit-frame vehicles don’t have a traditional rail frame and the weight is shared by chassis and the body. The unit-frame vehicles are good to tow small RVs.

    Drive train

It is better to choose a vehicle with rear-wheel drive as it provides profound stability and better traction as compare to front-wheel vehicle. You can also use four-wheel drive vehicle which is even better.

  • 4

    Vehicle loading

Every vehicle has a maximum weight loading capacity which is mentioned on its instruction manual. So, you must note down the weight loading capacity before choosing a vehicle for towing.

  • 5

    Vehicle type

If you are looking forward to tow a big RV, you will require a huge truck. On the other hand, if you have an RV which is like a van, you can select an SUV or a large sedan.

  • 6

    Transmission

Usually, a vehicle with automatic transmission is considered as a better choice for towing the RVs. But, you can also use manual transmission vehicles.

  • 7

    Brakes

You must choose a vehicle with ABS brakes.
